Daily, about three thousand employees arrive to work at Industrial zone Trata located northeast of Škofja Loka. According to the estimates of the 3 companies participating in the project (Knauf Insulation, LTH Castings, Sibo G), up to 94 % of their employees commute by car, which causes traffic jams, reduces traffic safety, reduces the quality of life and is an important source of GHG emissions.
There are no existing guidelines at the national level addressing the sustainable mobility challenges of industrial zones. At the same time, there is no strategic document on sustainable mobility available for the industrial zone Trata. For solving this challenge a diverse consortium was formed, joining different partners from the public sector, development agencies, economic sector and experts in the field of sustainable mobility (Municipality of Škofja Loka as leading partner, Development agency Sora, IPoP – Institute for Spatial Policies, Cipra Slovenia, Cipra International, companies Knauf Insulation, LTH Castings and SIBO G.) The project encourages the employees of industrial zone Trata to come to work in a sustainable way. By changing the mobility habits of employees, the project will contribute to mitigating climate change.
The project will be implemented until 30. 04. 2024 and benefits from a 1.070.023,60 € grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants.
As part of the project, the municipality of Škofja Loka will build the missing part of a two-way bicycle lane, located in the eastern part of the industrial zone, which will connect the industrial zone Trata with village Godešič. Each participating company will receive an individual mobility plan with measures for encouraging employees to adopt a sustainable way of commuting to work and a mobility manager to manage the process. They will also acquire a bicycle shed, buy electric bicycles for employees and install an electric charging station for electric bicycles. With a study visit to Liechtenstein we will learn how companies abroad encourage their employees to come to work in a sustainable way and transfer the good practices to the local area of Škofja Loka region. As part of the project, the guidelines for addressing the challenges of sustainable mobility at the level of industrial zones in Slovenia will be prepared, which will be the basis for similar projects in the country.
Through promotional and organisational measures, we will present the advantages of sustainable forms of mobility to employees of the three participating companies and encourage them to change the way of coming to work. Our goal is to change the mobility habits in the direction of sustainable forms of mobility for at least 4 % of employees and in that way set a good example for other companies in industrial zone Trata and beyond. With this pilot integration and cooperation between companies within the industrial zone, the municipality, the development agency and experts, we are hoping to set one of the best example of promoting sustainable mobility in Slovenia.
